Frequently Asked Questions

How might therapy help me?

There are times when each of us may feel overwhelmed, lost, trapped, isolated or invisible. It can often be so much easier to talk to someone outside of your usual circle of family and friends, especially if you are concerned about burdening others with your problems or feel there is no-one who truly understands.

A trained psychotherapist/counsellor can offer a safe, understanding and supportive environment where you can talk with someone who is trained to listen. Psychotherapy sessions are confidential, this means that you can talk about things you might not feel able to discuss with anyone else.

What will happen in the first session?

This is a chance for us to discuss what has brought you to therapy, I will explain a little more about the process and my ways of working and listen to an overview of your story and any history that you feel is relevant. Most importantly, it enables you to get a feel for me as a practitioner and whether you would like us to work together moving forwards. Trust your instincts in this session and feel free to ask as many questions as you want to.

How many sessions will I have?

I work with clients both long and short term; the number of sessions will depend on you and your needs and what you are comfortable with. In certain settings, I offer single session counselling conversations. Other than this, it is unusual for therapy to last for less than six sessions, sometimes it may last for two years or more. It is important to remember that you decide.

Will I have to talk about things I don’t want to?

No, you are completely in control of the sessions and what you bring to them. The therapeutic relationship is one based on trust, empathy and equality and it is non-judgmental. Part of my role is to follow your lead - moving at your pace and in your chosen direction. You may (or may not) find that the focus of therapy changes over time, again this will be led by you.
